IOC Working Group to Investigate Climate Change and Global Trends of Phytoplankton in the Oceans

8 - 12 December 2016, Zhuhai, China

IOC has approved the formation of WG TrendsPO in June 2016 and the kick-off meeting of this group will be held during December 8-12, 2016 in Guangzhou (or Zhuhai), China.

The SCOR WG137 “Global Patterns of Phytoplankton Dynamics in Coastal Ecosystems: Comparative Analysis of Time-Series Observations” has been successful, and collected many long time series data sets. The objectives are to discuss how to conduct more global comparisons and synthesis of phytoplankton time series, which would be extremely valuable to more fully understand commonalities and contrasts with regard to ecological responses to climate change, as well as natural and man-made changes. The utilization of those data sets are not only of fundamental scientific value; they are also very important in continuing and promoting monitoring efforts and facilitating management of the world’s estuarine, coastal and open ocean waters.
